Another researcher is looking to make contact with living relatives of this 7 Squadron airman, who was on the crew of an Avro Lancaster B Mk.III ND897 (MG-C) which flew out of RAF Oakington on an operation to bomb Siracourt V1 site on 29 Jun 1944. The plane crashed near St Pol-sur-Ternoise. His remains were not found and he is commemorated at Runnymede, along with two of his five other crew colleagues, RAF 147687 F/O Walter Woodward and RCAF J/23609 Kenneth Davis.
Of the other three, RAF 1608500 F/S Richard John Powell is buried at St. Pol War Cemetery, and the others Sgt C.A. Farrington and F/L Donald Mortimer escaped the crash to be taken prisoner.
Here’s his CWGC entry…
His mother’s maiden name was Lilian Ruby Newbold and they lived in East Dulwich, London. After his father Cyril Thomas Dovey died, Lilian married Edward Hanrahan and they had children, including Ruby Hanrahan who married Alfred Best. Lilian had two brothers Frank W. Newbold and George E. Newbold, and her father was William Miles Newbold.
If you are a relative of his, or if you’re also researching him, his crash, or one of his crew fellows, please get in touch and I’ll forward your contact to the other researcher. Thanks!
